How to Get an Emotionally Unavailable Man to Open Up

How to Get an Emotionally Unavailable Man to Open Up

There are few things worse than banging on your man’s emotional door and not invoking even the slightest response from him.

What is it with men and their electrified high-security fences?

Why won’t he invite you in? Why won’t he emotionally connect with you?!

Being in a relationship with someone who is emotionally unavailable can be frustrating.

You can’t really connect with him on a deeper level.

The truth about why men are often emotionally distant might surprise you.

It’s because they are afraid.

Terribly afraid.

And they don’t even realize it themselves.

1. Understand That Your Man’s Emotional Distance Has Very Little to Do With You

The first step in getting through your man’s emotional barriers is understanding that it’s not your fault he is being this way.

His emotional walls have little or NOTHING to do with you.

They have been there long before you even arrived.

In other words, he’s not specifically rejecting YOU, he’s rejecting EVERYTHING he perceives as “potential threats”.

He probably also plays it safe, so he puts everything on the “potential threat” list, rather than risk getting hurt.

Next up, you need to keep in mind that he’s so used to being emotionally distant and unavailable, that HE DOES NOT EVEN NOTICE IT.

Imagine this conversation:

You: “Honey, I feel like when I try to get through to you emotionally, you put up this impenetrable wall.”

Him: “What are you talking about? What wall? Like a brick wall?”

“No, like an emotional barrier, it’s as though you’re scared of me and don’t want to let me in”

“Me? Scared of you? What? I haveth no fear woman!”

And he’ll go on to denying everything.

Because acknowledging that he has put up a wall, means acknowledging that he’s been hurt.

And that’s a big No-No for men.

Because being hurt means being weak and men aren’t supposed to show any weaknesses.

2. Understand That He Is Wounded And Needs Time To Heal

His wall exists because he’s been hurt in the past. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a wall, he’d be open and easy-going.

He put boundaries up over YEARS to prevent oncoming attacks and prevent getting hurt again.

We all do this to a lesser or greater degree.

It’s just that his boundaries might even rival that great wall in China.

This, of course, makes him very inaccessible and leaves you emotionally unfulfilled.

Which sucks.

So there are certain parts of his emotional world that have been attacked and damaged and they need to be gently healed.

This will take time.

Don’t set yourself up to fail by expecting instantaneous change.

Have you ever broken a bone? It takes months to heal and years for a full recovery.

And it is no different from emotional wounds.

Getting him back on track requires listening, patience and a lot of encouragement.

Bit by bit he will let his walls down.

3. Be Prepared, He Will Test You

Do you know what’s more threatening than an attack?

Somebody getting past your defensive walls of emotional unavailability.

Because without them, you can’t even fend off an attack!

So don’t expect him to initially welcome your desire to get past his guard.

You will encounter a lot of resistance.

The key here NOT TO PUSH.

Pushing him to open up will only VALIDATE his belief in the necessity for his wall and even STRENGTHEN it.

You need to be strategic about this.

When you sense his resistance, accept it and give him space. Come back to it, when he’s cooled off.

Show him that you mean no harm.

You can even TELL HIM that you mean no harm.

In our relationship, we’ve often reassured each other this way.

We gradually let our guard down as the other PROVED to us, that they had good intentions.

He has to SEE that you don’t attack him and are KIND to him instead.

The more times he has the experience of you being gentle and loving when he’s in a tight or vulnerable spot, the more his walls will come down.

And this will happen involuntarily! He won’t have control over it!

The more he sees that you are kind and nurturing instead of attacking, the more his guard will drop, simply because it’s what’s GOOD FOR HIM.

Everybody craves deep meaningful connection, we can’t help but move towards it!

It’s irresistible.

It’s all well and good to be the giving and loving woman, but ultimately you need YOUR pay off too.

And here’s where you get it.

The more you apply the above-mentioned attitude, the less you’ll be banging on his proverbial emotional door asking to be let in.

He’ll gradually trust you increasingly and you’ll finally be able to have the emotional intimacy with him that you desire.

Now if despite everything, he remains emotionally unavailable and you’re not entirely sure how to work around it, you might find it helpful to learn more about how to gain his trust.

Ultimately, the more times you’ve proven to him that you’re “Safe”, the easier and faster his walls will come down.

What’s more, is, he’ll LEARN that letting his guard down with you is a GOOD THING, a positive experience from which he also reaps plenty of benefits.

Which causes this mutually beneficial connection to reinforce itself. Getting an emotionally distant man is not easy, but it’s not impossible!

10 Unique Questions for a Perfect Date With Him

10 Unique Questions for a Perfect Date With Him

From guy to girl, let’s be honest here…

Dates can be awkward as hell.

A little while ago a guy likely appeared on your radar and you two got to know each other a little.

Which eventually led to agreeing to go on a date…

But now that the date is around the corner and you’re maybe a little doubtful or nervous:

  • What if it’s weird or awkward?
  • What if HE’S weird and awkward?
  • Will I need a blueprint with the emergency exits?
  • Wait. What if HE doesn’t like ME?!”

I’m exaggerating a little here…

But if you can relate to any of the above thoughts, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel skittish.

As a man, let me also reassure you that MEN have these worries AS WELL!

Sure we play all cool and detached, but DON’T BE FOOLED!

It’s just an act.

So now that you’re going on a date, you can warm things up with a little small talk:

How are you?
The weather is so…
“Omg, did you hear what happened…?

You know, the classics, etc..

Then when the moment feels right, you can ask your date some of the following questions to peak his interest in you.

(Women who ask questions and take the lead are INSTANTLY respected more by guys)

The questions also have the added benefit of you gauging his answers and seeing if he’s OF INTEREST TO YOU.

Almost like a job interview, would you employ him? 😉

Let’s find out!

Question #1 | “What Is The Cheesiest Pick Up Line You’ve Heard So Far?”

“Are you from Tennessee?… ‘Cause you’re the only ten I see.

Terrible, I know.

But it can break some awkward walls.

Ask him (if you dare) and find out whether he’s actually used it!

It’ll give you a taste of his flirting skills (or lack thereof).

Question #2 | “Is There a Thing You Would Never Ever Do?”

Bold, cautious or total wimp?

Time to find out!

Question #3 | “What Things Do You Consider Yourself to Be Good At?”

Like most men, I’ll likely always fall for this one.

We’re just so “humble”, that we’ll never pass up on an opportunity to let every woman in the world know how amazing and great we are.

We just can’t help ourselves! It’s hopeless. 😅

But can he keep himself in check at least a little?

Also, if he isn’t totally self-absorbed he will RETURN the question.

Question #4 | “ What’s the Show to Watch on Netflix or Amazon Prime Right Now?”

You can tell a lot about a guy based on his favorite show.

Is he into series about tough but heartless gangsters?

No?

More the smart detective that solves impossible murder cases…

Or the heavens forbid, has he watched all seasons of FRIENDS a dozen times?

Time to find out which characters your date sees himself in!

Question #5 | “What’s the Best Thing That’s Happened to You?”

The lottery? A job opportunity? Finally managing that backward somersault?

Or if he’s really cheeky, “Obviously, this date with you…”

Question #6 | “Do You Have Something That You’re Proud of That You Haven’t Told Anybody Yet?”

Are you into mysterious guys? Some men have secret projects.

They’re often kept secret while they’re in their delicate development stage.

But maybe you’ve swooned him with your charm already and he’ll want to tell you EVERYTHING!

Question #7 | “What’s Something That Bugs You About the World?”

Are there things about the world that frustrate you?

Personally, there aren’t any for me… Except, you know, almost EVERYTHING that could be fixed or improved!

And he surely has his gripes too.

With this question, you’ll be able to see whether you care about and value the same things or live on the opposite ends of the planet.

Question #8 | “Would You Rather Go to a Family Reunion or an Amusement Park?”

Is his family pleasant or would he rather do anything BUT that?

I for one, would rather go for a walk alone in a graveyard as the clock struck midnight than attend my family reunion.

It’s nothing personal really, we all just collectively hate each other.

How about you?

Question #9 | “What Are the Best and Worst Flavours of Ice Cream?”

This can make or break a date.

You can take this one a step further “Ben & Jerry’s or Häagen-Dazs?

Things can get personal and ugly quickly though, careful with this question. 😉

Question #10 | “What’s the Worst Advice Someone’s Given You?”

Have you ever been convinced to do something by a friend who branded it as GREAT advice…?

That then turned out to be THE WORST thing you could have ever possibly done?

Yeah, me neither.

But let’s find out whether he has!

Conclusion

And there we have it.

10 questions that will undoubtedly keep your date on his toes, you in control and the last time you’re likely to see him.

I’m kidding.

But DO BE CAREFUL not to ask ALL of these questions on your first date!

He’ll think you’re nuts and you and I both know you’re a delightful human being, let him see that side of you…

The crazy can come later. 😬

So, pick only a couple of questions that you like and are actually CURIOUS to hear the answer to.

This will create an organic and super interesting atmosphere.

Plus he’ll see you as deep and be curious to learn more about YOU!

Let me know how your date went (I’m totally curious!) and if you have any questions about the questions.

Leave them in the comments section and I’ll get back to you!

How to Use Your Insecurities to Actually Get What You Want From Him

How to Use Your Insecurities to Actually Get What You Want From Him

Get what I want by using my insecurities?? How the hell is that supposed to work?!

It’s ironic, isn’t it?

You’d likely expect insecurities to NOT get you what you want in a relationship.

Something you might actually rather HIDE so that you’re not rejected!

But there’s an unexpected loophole…

1. Your Insecurities Are a Way to Connect With Him

When you feel insecure about something, you’re likely in a VULNERABLE state.

Meaning you feel emotionally exposed.

(Which yes, is often NOT a pleasant experience since it carries RISK)

However, if you’ve built some trust with him and you then display some vulnerability (insecurity) of yours, it will make him CONNECT with you.

Vulnerability forces connection to happen because vulnerability is REAL!

In other words, it’s not a protective mask you’re presenting to him.

It’s the real YOU.

And when you do that, you connect straight with him and his heart.

If you’re not sure how to do this, just try to FEEL your emotions and insecurities.

It’s in FEELING them that they become “visible” to both you AND to him. When your emotions aren’t being felt, they remain hidden.

As a man, I will tell you that in my experience…

When women did this, it immediately created an IRRESISTABLE connection between her and myself.

It’s potent stuff.

2. Once You Are Connected With Him, He’ll Want to Care For You

The connection you’ve established is a very POWERFUL one.

Because it’s based on real emotions you’re sharing with him.

This creates a connection with his heart that he can’t resist.

Since you’re making him feel SPECIAL because you trusted him with your insecurities and that in turn will make him feel like ‘the man’ and invoke his protective instincts.

To illustrate, when Karolina shares something vulnerable with me like this, it immediately SOFTENS me…

But it also makes me feel like I WANT to take care of her and give her what she wants!

You see, you’ve tapped into a man’s protective instincts and he’ll move mountains to try and make you happy.

(and will likely also want to DESTROY anything that might harm you 😉)

3. In The Protective Instinct State, You Can Get What You Want From Him

Once you’ve gotten him into the protective instinct state, it’s a good time to get what you want from him.

He’ll be far more receptive since he’s bonded with you now.

Whether you want more intimacy, to feel safer or you just want him to finally listen to you, so that you feel supported and understood by him.

Whatever it is you’re needing…

There’s a much higher chance of getting it from him when you’ve connected with him this way through you’re insecurities and vulnerability.

10 Things You Should Know About Long Term Relationships That Nobody Tells You

10 Things You Should Know About Long Term Relationships That Nobody Tells You

Is your relationship what you expected it to be?

If you’re new around here, know that Karolina and I are all about long term relationships being loving and EXCITING!

Having said that, we have seen women feel uninspired and disappointed in their long term relationships.

They’re not what they hoped for them to be…

They’ve lost the excitement and the feeling of having found their soul mate and being totally connected with him.

And let me be honest with you here, long term relationships are not all fun and games.

There are less pleasant things about them that nobody likes to talk about or tell you.

So whether you’ve just started your first long term relationship and are beginning to realize things are not what you expected…

Or you’re a veteran and have gone through the realities of long-term relationships…

Let me reassure you, these things are a NORMAL part of any lasting relationship.

1. Your Dynamic Changes When You Move From Dating to Long-Term

When Karolina and I went through this transition, we gradually started to realize that things felt different.

There was less excitement and unpredictability.

It felt like we were kind of ‘settling into’ our relationship.

Because we both understood that we want to be together for the long-term.

The courting phase took a back seat.

There was less uncertainty and fear of the other suddenly saying “Sorry, it’s not working for me.”

There was a really positive flip side of there being less excitement and unpredictability in our relationship, though:

We actually felt safer and trusted each other more.

2. You Will Experience Predictability and Boredom

Have you ever found yourself noticing that you knew exactly what he was going to say or do next?

You’ve been with him for so long now, that you’re already rolling your eyes, knowing the sentence or story he’s about to tell for the 100th time?

I won’t lie. It sucks.

It’s TERRIBLE to think you can see the rest of your life dully unfolding with him…

And wonder if you will ever experience the excitement you once had at the beginning of your relationship again.

But I’ve got GOOD news for you.

You actually can reclaim the honeymoon phase of your relationship and bring back the spark.

3. A Lot of Your Time Will Be Spent Taking Care of Responsibilities

When you’re in a long-term relationship, your lives will gradually merge in some areas.

If you’ve recently decided to move in together, you’ll share the responsibilities of you’re home:

  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Paying rent/mortgage
  • Laundry

Now, these aren’t the most exciting things to do in a relationship.

But responsibilities are simply a part of it and they unfortunately eat into your time.

To switch things up, we like to treat ourselves to events or go on dates (Whether it be during Spring, Summer or Winter) or sometimes have fun date night games.

4. You Need To Make Proactive Efforts to Keep the Attraction Alive

Yup, we all need to roll up our sleeves and make efforts to keep the chemistry bubbling!

However, it’s not what you think.

In our case, we had a dull phase where the excitement seemed to evaporate between us…

But eventually, we came to realize that the old approach simply wasn’t working anymore, because we had CHANGED as people.

It wasn’t that all hope was lost and attraction could only be found with another person again.

It was that Karolina’s and my needs had EVOLVED and our romantic life had to as well.

5. You Will Doubt Your Relationship With Him at Times

I can’t begin to tell you how many of our friends had expressed doubts about their choice of partner.

But let me reassure you.

It is perfectly normal and even healthy to doubt your relationship!

We both found that it was what actually made room for us to grow and move past old ways of relating to each other that weren’t working for us anymore.

6. You Will Still Feel Attracted to Other People

Choosing to be in a long term relationship, doesn’t mean you won’t feel attracted to other people.

Attraction is not something we can really control.

Karolina and I talk as openly as we can about this.

It isn’t easy and can be very scary.

But ironically, after we talk about it we mostly feel CLOSER afterward!

Because we realize that being able to talk so openly about feeling attracted to somebody else is a testament to how much trust you can build with your partner!

Ultimately you can be madly in love with your partner and feel safe and secure…

EVEN IF either of you might feel attracted to other people from time to time.

7. Your Connection Needs to Evolve to Keep Sex Exciting

As is with romance, so it is with sex.

In the title, I emphasized CONNECTION and not sex.

That’s because it is your connection to your man that directly informs your sex life the most.

Especially when you’ve been together for a longer time.

We’ve found that shifting our attention from certain acts…

To our CONNECTION and intention added FAR more excitement and satisfaction.

So it’s helpful to nourish your connection and keep getting to know each other.

One way you can do this is by giving him what all men want but might often not tell you about…

8. The Changes You Hoped for Take Longer Than Expected

Do you ever wish your partner would change in any of the following areas?

  • He takes better care of his body
  • He gives you more attention
  • He’s successful in his endeavors
  • He listens to you and understands what you’re feeling

But these changes are only happening slowly or are not even happening?

It’s not uncommon for change to take longer than expected…

Things are generally more challenging and complex than he likely thinks and the additional curveballs life throws his way, slow him down even more.

I personally like to think that an attitude of perseverance is what makes or breaks success.

And you can have a far greater positive impact on his attitude than you might think.

9. You Will Have External Pressure From Family and Friends

Do you want to be independent in life and make your own choices?

We certainly value our freedom A LOT.

But the reality is that both Karolina and I had TONS of external pressure from our families and also some from our friends.

Both of our families like to get involved and tell us what life and relationship decisions we should be making and when we should be making them.

You’re likely going to experience this kind of external pressure in a long term relationship.

So it’s important to find a healthy balance and boundaries.

Personally, we find ourselves the happiest when we prioritize our relationship and what we want.

10. You Will Be Angry at Him Sometimes and Fight

Although unpleasant relationship arguments are actually HEALTHY! (When done right)

They are also an inevitable part of long term relationships.

We know from personal experience that in the heat of the moment, you often just want to quit and leave it all behind.

It can be incredibly painful after all…

Karolina and I had a lot of conflicts during the earlier stages of our relationship

But we eventually FINALLY learned how to stop fighting!

And even just REDUCING the amount of arguments you have can be a HUGE relief for your relationship.

Conclusion

There are many facets to long term relationships that are rarely talked about.

Being aware of them and learning to work with or around them is a skill that can greatly benefit your relationship.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of them.

And if you’d like to share your personal experiences or thoughts, drop us a comment below and we’ll get back to you.

5 Habits of Super Happy Couples

5 Habits of Super Happy Couples

I grew up dreaming of finding my one and only TRUE LOVE and living happily ever after.

Unfortunately, my reality had very little in common with the fairy tales.

It took a lot more than just finding “The One” to build a strong and happy relationship.

Gabriel and I had gone through a LOT of trial and error before we figured out what was working and what wasn’t.

In doing so, we realized that some habits we built contributed significantly to our happiness.

This article covers, the top 5 habits that can help you find your happiness too!

Habit #1 | Talking to Each Other a Lot Improves Communication in Relationships

Communication is an extremely important factor for happy couples.

It’s a skill that we think all couples should prioritize.

I know from my own experience that learning to get through to each other can be very tricky.

But when it comes to communication in relationships (much like with many other skills) practice makes perfect.

And the good news is…

The best and most straightforward way to practice communicating is to simply keep talking to each other.

When this is a consistent habit, you will spend LESS TIME fighting and more being happy together!

Habit #2 | Treating Each Other as a Priority Makes People Feel Closer

A big part of feeling loved is feeling important.

Nobody likes to be dismissed and treated like they’re secondary.

That’s why happy couples make an effort to consider each other and the relationship a PRIORITY.

This means putting each other’s needs FIRST.

And seeing obligations related to work, friends or even family as SECONDARY.

Having this habit will make you feel more connected and stable in your relationship.

Habit #3 | Making an Effort Prevents Taking Each Other for Granted

In the early stages of dating, people often make a continuous effort to impress their new partner.

They dress up, work out, cook elaborate meals, etc.

However, as the relationship progresses, a lot of couples tend to slack.

When people have been together for longer they often make more effort to look good for work than to dress up for a date night.

This is partially because they now trust each other and can relax more about their appearance. (Which is a GREAT thing!)

But it can also simply be pure laziness.

I’m as guilty of this as anybody else.

I spend most of my weekends wearing yoga pants and baggy sweaters…

But I’m also sure to make an effort AT LEAST every once in a while that I know will make Gabriel happy.

The habit of making efforts (even if they’re little) will let him know, you appreciate him.

In turn, it encourages him to return the gesture.

Habit #4 | Keep the Chemistry in Your Relationship by Flirting With Your Man

I think we can all agree, flirting is FUN.

Gabriel often rolls his eyes at me and says “Oh you flirt..”

It’s true, I am constantly flirting and teasing him.

And I know he LOVES it.

This kind of fun shouldn’t be limited to the early stages of relationships only.

It’s such a great and easy way to reignite the spark and reawaken attraction between people.

Happy couples never stop flirting.

So keep up the good habit. 😉

Habit #5 | Constantly Getting to Know Each Other Better Can Make Your Relationship Grow

When people have been together for a long time they often assume that they now know everything there is to know about each other.

But the reality is, there is always more to find out about a person.

Gabriel and I have been together for over 8 years now and I’m still learning new things about him almost EVERY DAY.

It’s stuff like events from his past as well as some surprising likes and preferences.

Showing an interest in your man’s world and making space for him to express his real thoughts and desires will make him grow more ATTACHED to you.

If you’re in need of some inspiration, here are: helpful questions you can ask him, to get to know him better.

Leaving room for both of you to be your real selves with each other will deepen your emotional connection and make your relationship grow.

So keep up the habit of staying curious about getting to know him on a deeper level.

You’ll be surprised to discover how many interesting layers he has.

Conclusion

So to summarize, here are the 5 habits again:

  • Habit #1 | Talking to each other a lot
  • Habit #2 | Prioritizing each other
  • Habit #3 | Making continuous efforts
  • Habit #4 | Keep the spark with flirting
  • Habit #5 | Stay curious about each other

We credit them for making us much happier and stable as a couple.

Even if you only get 2-3 of these down, you’ll notice great improvements in your relationship!

If you have any questions or would like to add something, let me know in the comments section.

The 3 Basic Skills Your Relationship Can’t Survive Without

The 3 Basic Skills Your Relationship Can’t Survive Without

There are many skills you can learn that improve your relationship.

But there are 3 that had the MOST POSITIVE EFFECT on our relationship and made it LAST!

These skills:

  • Got us through our worst patches
  • Are the ones, we use MOST FREQUENTLY to this day
  • Dissipated our conflicts before they even escalated

In other words, they’re the most USEFUL and they’ll have the BIGGEST impact in ensuring the growth and survival of your relationship.

I’ve listed them in the order in which we’ve learned and perfected them.

1. Why Reflective Listening Will Keep Your Partner Hooked

Reflective listening is the first skill we discovered, that significantly reduced our fights.

What is reflective listening?

In case you haven’t heard about it before, reflective listening is a communication strategy involving two key steps:

  • Seeking to understand your partner’s thought
  • Then repeating the thought back to him, to confirm you’ve understood him.

In other words, you listen to your partner carefully, then say what they said back to them to ensure that they feel understood.

For example:

Him: “Work was such BS! My boss is so incompetent, he doesn’t even get what I’m working on! But he doesn’t even care to try and understand either! I’d do a WAY better job if I was in his position.”

You: “So your boss is not listening to you or not trying to understand what you’re working on AGAIN?

Him: “Yes, exactly! Why am I even working for this guy?”

And so on and so forth.

The power of this skill is not to be underestimated, it will keep him absolutely HOOKED.

Because he will feel so understood and heard by you!

I’m speaking from experience here.

Karolina has gotten so good at this by now, nobody can compete.

And when I’m having a bad day, I KNOW that when I tell her about it, she’ll reflect what I’m saying back to me and it’ll help me feel less alone and sort it out.

Without this skill though, you and your partner might find yourselves endlessly turning in circles.

Because it’s extremely difficult to feel understood otherwise.

2. How Resolving Problems Prevents Potential Relationship Crises

A relationship without problem-solving will deteriorate.

It’s a harsh truth, but I don’t want to lie to you.

When problems are ignored and swept under the rug, they don’t disappear…

They actually compound.

And over time, the pile becomes so big it’ll infect most areas of your relationship and cause a crisis that it might not survive.

This is why problem-solving is the second skill on this list.

Karolina and I learned this lesson the HARD WAY.

We got along so well at the beginning, the problems that popped up seemed insignificant, so we ignored them.

But as time went by, they grew and grew, until they erupted into endless frustrating fights.

This is when we decided to tackle our problems head-on and started asking questions:

  • What exactly are we fighting about here?
  • “What can we do to fix this?”
  • What unmet need is driving us to argue?”

We figured it out in the end, but we would have saved ourselves a lot of heartbreak, had we started dealing with our relationship problems earlier on.

3. Romance & Sex Will Keep Your Relationship Healthy & Exciting

Romance and sex are what differentiate your platonic friendships from your intimate relationship.

And they fulfill basic human needs:

Feeling attractive, desired and connected through sex.

You and your partner trying to fulfill each other sexual needs is an important factor that can make or break your relationship.

If you stop making an effort to be intimately close with each other, your attraction will dry up.

Yes, romance and sex can be perceived as skills.

You can learn them and get better at them but not in the traditional sense.

It’s not about performing certain actions or learning to do things in a particular way.

What makes romance and sex work in a long term relationship is developing and deepening the emotional connection with your partner.

You can make your sex life so much more fulfilling and exciting just by getting to know your partner better.

Building trust can help you both open up and let each other in more.

And the closer and more connected you get, the more fulfilling and exciting your sex life can become… 😉

If you have thoughts or questions, let me know in the comments below and I’ll get back to you.
